        HEA Panels (High Energy Absorption) are manufactured from steel ropes and connected with high-resistance 3mm wire "knots".  HEA Panels have been evaluated for the following:

        • resistance of the "knot" to tear and pull apart
        • resistance of the "knot" to the opening of one single mesh in static conditions
        • deformation of the HEA panel under static load
        • load dissipation of the HEA panel and distribution to the anchorages.

        Comparative tests undertaken on traditional cable mesh panels connected with "clips" demonstrated that Maccaferri"s HEA panels performed better and were of better quality.

        In the case of the connection "knot", as the limit resistance is reached, the "knot" progressively unties itself until the breaking point of one of the wires is reached.  With traditional clip connection systems, the connection suddenly fails when the limiting resistance is exceeded, producing immediate unravelling of the panel.

        HEA Panels can also be used for -

        Passive System

        250mm x 250mm, 300mm x 300mm or 400mm x 400mm steel cables (8mmØ or 10mmØ) that are connected with high resistance knots to produce a high tensile strength drapery system. Used where block detachments are greater than 600mmØ and tensile strengths imposed in the cable mesh by self weight and debris accumulation at the toe are less than 216kN/m (Factors of Safety must be included dependant on project requirements). Panel sizes are up to 10m x 6m and can be connected to form large areas. The HEA panels can be used in combination with Rockfall Netting where rocks smaller than the cable mesh aperture are also expected to detach.

        Active System

        250mm x 250mm, 300mm x 300mm or 400mm x 400mm steel cables (8mmØ or 10mmØ) that are connected with high resistance knots to produce a high tensile strength rock stabilisation system. Used in combination with rock anchors by containing possible rock detachments (typically in the order of 1-1.5m³) to provide high resistance with minimal deformation in order to limit movement of the rock mass. Panel sizes are up to 10m x 6m and can be connected to form large areas. The HEA panels can be used in combination with Rockfall Netting where rocks smaller than the cable mesh aperture are also expected to detach.
